This project was done in response to a prompt to visually depict “coexistence” in whatever means we deemed necessary. This prompt led me to experiment with interlocking things, finally settling on the weave and weft of fabric as the most appropriate media. I further experimented with patterning and the notion of interlocking within the pattern as a means of conveying coexistence. The final product is a result of this study, with the male and female icons interlocked in rows, holding hands. I dropped a girl and boy from the pattern (repeated three times in the final print), to draw attention to the individual pieces that make up the whole as well as the overall effect of the textile.
